3. Joseph BARTRAM/ Joseph BERTRAM

There is not a lot of information available as yet concerning Joseph BARTRAM – the son of the duck stealing Lewis BARTRAM and father of Nigal Arthur BERTRAM. Hopefully more historical information will become available.

Joseph was born in Launceston on July 17, 1858. At some stage – probably in the 1880s – Joseph left Tasmania and travelled to Victoria. On March 20, 1886, Joseph married Sarah Jane LIGHT, the grand daughter of William LIGHT, one of the founders of the city of Adelaide. Sarah was born on June 5, 1869, and so was no yet 17 when she married the 28 year old Joseph. Both lived out there lives in Stratford. Joseph died there on June 21, 1932, at the age of 74. Sarah died there in August 23, 1946, at the age of 77.

According to his son’s death certificate, Joseph was a carpenter.
According to the genealogist Rowley, the change from BARTRAM to BERTRAM occurred on Joseph’s marriage certificate as a result of a clerical error. Another possible explanation is that Joseph wanted to distance himself from the name BARTRAM and his father’s convict origins.

Joseph and Sarah had fifteen children in all:

The Sarah listed here was William Lights granddaughter (NOT daughter). The Lights in Stratford were known for their heritage. They were also close friends with the Bertram relatives & descendants. My mother still remembers granny Bertram (Sarah) who passed on when mum was 10 yo. They lived their lives in a house right nearby.
