1. Lewis Bartram: the first member of the Bertram Family in Australia

Lewis Bartram was transported to Australia in 1833, for a heinous crime: he had stolen a duck. He was just 16 years of age when he was convicted and forced to leave his native home. His child, Joseph Bartram, was born in Launceston, Tasmania, in the 1861. He 'migrated' to Victoria in the 1880s, and settled in Stratford. There he married Sarah Light, the grand daughter of Sir William Light, one of the founders of Adelaide.Family lore has it that the minister could not understand Joseph's writing, and he became Bertram. In August, 2009, I discovered that I was a member of the Bertram clan.
